Most software engineer resumes are rejected before a human ever reads them — not because the candidate isn't qualified, but because the resume is formatted in a way an applicant tracking system (ATS) can't parse, or because it lists responsibilities instead of results. This template fixes both. Below is the structure that works, the keywords to include, and examples of bullets that get interviews.

What makes a software engineer resume work

Engineering hiring is evidence-based: recruiters and engineering managers look for proof you've shipped real systems and measurable impact. Three things matter most:

The sections every engineer resume needs

1. Header

Name, job title, email, phone, city, and links to your GitHub and portfolio. Skip the full mailing address and date of birth — they waste space and aren't expected.

2. Technical summary (2–3 lines)

A short pitch that names your specialty, years of experience, and one or two standout results. Tailor it to the role you're applying for rather than writing one generic version.

3. Skills, grouped

Group by category so both the ATS and a skimming reader find what they need fast — for example: Languages, Frameworks, Infrastructure, Tools. List the strongest, most job-relevant skills first.

4. Experience — written as achievements

This is where most resumes fail. Lead each bullet with an action verb, describe what you built, and end with the measurable outcome. Use the what → how → result pattern.

Weak: "Responsible for backend services and fixing bugs."
Strong: "Rebuilt the order-processing service in Go, cutting p95 latency from 850ms to 180ms and supporting a 3× traffic increase during peak sales."

5. Projects

Especially valuable for junior engineers and career-changers. Include 1–3 projects with a one-line description, the stack, and a link. Show ownership and outcome, not just "built a to-do app."

6. Education & certifications

Degree, school, and graduation year. Add relevant certifications (AWS, Kubernetes, etc.) if you have them. Bootcamp grads should list the program and any capstone work.

Keywords that help a software engineer resume pass ATS

Mirror the exact terms in the job posting. These are commonly scanned for software roles — include the ones that are genuinely true for you:

PythonJavaScriptTypeScriptGoJavaReactNode.jsREST APIsGraphQLPostgreSQLAWSDockerKubernetesCI/CDmicroservicesunit testingAgilesystem design
Don't keyword-stuff. Listing skills you can't speak to in an interview backfires. The goal is to match the real overlap between your experience and the job — which is exactly what our ATS checker measures when you paste a job description.

How to use this template in Resumry

Frequently asked questions

What should a software engineer resume include?

A header with contact details, a short technical summary, a grouped skills section, work experience written as quantified achievements, projects, and education. Keep it to one page unless you have 10+ years of relevant experience.

Is this template ATS-friendly?

Yes — it uses a single-column, standard-heading layout with no tables, text boxes, or graphics that confuse applicant tracking systems, so your content is parsed correctly.

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page for most engineers. Two pages are reasonable for senior or staff-level candidates. Trim anything older than 10–12 years unless it's directly relevant.
